Initially all access will be using ssh (via university [VPN](https://its.uiowa.edu/support/article/1876) from off campus). Graphical logins can be accomplished using [FastX](https://clas.uiowa.edu/linux/help/fastx) or simply via "ssh -Y" from on campus. Since the university VPN appears to have a maximum connection time, we're anticipating that connections via an alternative ssh port will be implemented. [X2go](https://wiki.x2go.org/doku.php/download:start) is now available as well. In any case, for graphical logins, I strongly encourage you to use the MATE desktop environment. KDE has a severe problem with their Dolphin file manager trying to index the entire file system. Unless you know how to disable this indexing behavior, avoid KDE.

Whenever possible, logout from your graphical session when you're done. Don't just hit the X in the corner. We have observed several cases of "defunct" sessions that then interfere with new logins.

X2go occasionally gets into an oscillating state of failing and constantly restarting when audio is enabled. We recommend disabling audio.
